The Big Breakfast
LonelinessAustralia - Roma, Queensland
Inspiration
The inspiration came from a variety of things, but especially the motivation from my teachers to achieve something great and make a contribution to humanty. In addition, at a youth forum, a group of kids in Queensland said "It takes a million people to change the world..... but it only takes one person to change a million people". This wise saying came from a group of 12 year olds and this has contniued to be my guidence and motivation to create a better world.
What
It is a part of our St Johns School social justice program in which students volunteer to attend. This program involves home visits, attending disability organisations, visiting retirement villages and the BIG BREAKFAST. The big breakfast is a program that has been running for three years in which we attend a cheap independant retirement village for older men which is run by the local St Vincent De Pauls. At this venue we cook a barbeque breakfast for these men of a thursday morning as we listen, interact and offer mateship. These men generally have had problems ranging from disabilities to illness to alcholol addiction. These men enjoy the company and are eager for our visits and I have made so great friendships with them over the last three years. From them I gain life experience, happiness and friendship which is highly rewarding.
How
The program was organised by the school as of a Catholic Denomination as we try to live on the Christian values of love. We organised this event to be held at the local hall where we experienced low numbers and we wished to appeal to the wider community. So with this in mind, we decided to cook at an underpriviledged housing village where to this day we serve the marginalised community.
When
Thursday mornings
